An affair to remember... Naneghat Trek- Episode #2
After reaching Ghatghar, leaving Saurabh's bike at Mr. Pansare's home we marched towards Naneghat and managed to reach it within next 15 minutes. After reaching Naneghat what we saw was breath taking and it really can't be expressed in words. With the toll collecting pot at the beginning the Naneghat pass was between two huge mountains. After getting down the pass a bit we reached the caves. The Naneghat cave is huge and clean like your own living room. There is something carved on the walls in Brahmi script and probably dates back to 2000 yrs. It is believed that a powerful woman ruler Naganika, the wife of Satakarni (180–170 BCE) of the Satavahana family commissioned the cave, the statues and the inscriptions. Inscriptions in the cave mention her and her family members. Though the statues on the sides of the cave are now gone, the inscriptions still record some of the achievements of the sequence of powerful leaders in the same family.
On the other side of the cave was Nanacha Angatha which would act as the check post in those historical days. After resting a bit we left the cave to look around and found a very beautiful Ganesh Madnir at the top of the cave. There is even a Hanuman idol carved on the mountain wall just beside the cave. Had some click on the top of the mountain with few sunset shots and few group snaps. We were surprised to see our cell phones working at the top of the mountain and even for some time in the cave. We had a scenic view of the Konkan region from the top and right on the edge of the valley. For this because of the heavy wind and the huge depth of the valley we had to lie down on the edge of the valley. So after a brief photo session we returned to the cave to collect some firewood, so that we can make our dinner. After collecting some wood, Shrikant noticed his bike's key was not in place so again Santosh and Shrikant went uphill to find it out but fortunately(??) Shrikant forgot to lock his luggage box and the key was with it so in no time we started to collect the dry wood and after half an hour when Pankaj and Santosh bought a full dry bamboo tree from someone's farm and some coconut bushes with dry cactus branches we said its enough and proceeded to make the चूल and in no time the चूल was ready with some water to boil so that we can make the tomato soup. With Pankaj as our chief chef we made the soup in about 30 minutes and to add to the taste we had roasted papad. This was the best toast we ever had everyone with different soup containers (Pankaj's Mug, Sourabh's steel glass, Girish's small bowl, literaaly Santosh with the his large plate.

While enjoying papad with the soup we heard some voices and in few minutes a group arrived which made us very happy to see some people around as for the past 3 hours we were just 5 in the cave with no human traces around. After some intro we found out that the group is from Pune. So after offering our soup as the welcome drink we proceeded for the main course which included khichadi and a subji with pav. The other group had their own food arrangements so we started with the khichadi with again Pankaj as our chief chef.
While we were busy in preparing our main course the other group had finished their lunch and was now ready for some camp fire thrill. So at the cave entrance while they were enjoying the camp fire with traditional Marathi songs, we were busy in our dinner. After hour or so the dinner was ready and everyone was enough hungry to enjoy it. So again with some roasted papads, pav bhaji, delicious khichadi and Marathi music as background we really enjoyed the dinner and no one will ever forget the kind of dinner we had that evening. After finishing our dinner we were now ready for some ' Diwali Action'. Shrikant had purchased some crackers (rockets to be precise) the earlier day and we with other group were again at the pass entrance to light up our night. After few minutes we found it really difficult to light the crackers the reason being the powerful wind. So someone came up with the idea of lighting 2 match sticks at a time which worked in our favor. While we were busy in the crackers Shrikant and Santosh were busy in clicking the snaps. After all the crackers were over we clicked some group snaps with a bit odd way and returned to our temporary destination for some rest.
While Saurabh, Pankaj and Girish called off their day Santosh and Shriknat joined other group for some camp fire action and it continued till 2 am.
